Venue quizzes

Drop a Bits-in-the-Wild card on the table. Regulars scan, play, climb the leaderboard. You hand out the prizes.

What is it

A postcard with a QR code featuring Bits, our brain mascot, sitting inside the QR. The card lives on the counter or the table at your venue. Anyone with a phone can scan and play — no app install, no signup wall.

Each scan resolves to a venue page that's bound to your location. The quiz refreshes on a cadence you pick. The leaderboard belongs to your regulars.

Scan to play

Tap the QR with any phone camera. No download. No login required to play.

Climb the leaderboard

Top of the list when the period ends wins. You decide the prize.

Quiz refreshes itself

Set a topic rotation. We generate a fresh quiz for you every period.

How a period works

Pick a cadence — daily, weekly, or monthly — and Quizbits handles the rest.

  1. 1

    A new quiz drops

At the start of every period, the quiz refreshes. By default we generate it from your topic rotation list — you set 3–10 topics once at signup, we randomly pick one each period.
  2. 2

    Regulars scan and play

Each player gets one attempt per period. Server-authoritative scoring means no faking it from home — the quiz only counts when scanned at your venue.
  3. 3

    Leaderboard fills up

Live rankings update as plays come in. Players see their position the moment they finish — '4th of 27 this week.' That stake is what brings them back.
  4. 4

    Period ends, winner crowned

Top of the leaderboard wins. We generate a 6-digit redemption code automatically. You hand out the prize, type the code into your dashboard, done.

Picking a cadence

Different venues, different rhythms. Pick what matches the foot traffic.

Daily

  • Bigger venues with daily regulars.
  • Every day a new winner.
  • Quiz can refresh daily, or weekly with a daily leaderboard.

Weekly

  • Sweet spot for cafés, coffee shops, bookshops.
  • Pub quiz energy without the Tuesday-night labour.
  • Default cadence at signup.

Monthly

  • Lower-traffic spots or themed quizzes.
  • Bigger prize, longer leaderboard run.
  • Same quiz all month, or refreshes inside the month.

Where the quizzes come from

Fully hands-off by default. Hand-built when you want control.

Topic rotation (default)

Set 3–10 topics once. Each period the system picks one at random and generates a fresh 10-question quiz. Never runs out, never repeats back-to-back.

Hand-built and scheduled

Build a quiz yourself in the creator. Drop it in the schedule queue. The next period rolls — your quiz goes live exactly when you wanted it to.

Quick generate

Pick a topic right now, tap a button, get a fresh quiz in about 30 seconds. Use it to override a period or to seed your rotation.

Catalogue pick

Use any quiz from the public Quizbits catalogue. Good for one-off themed weeks (Halloween, World Cup, your local festival).

The next quiz is always one period ahead

Every venue carries two quizzes in flight: the one being played right now, and the one queued for next period. You can preview the next quiz, regenerate it, or swap it out — anytime before it goes live. No surprises.

Prizes

Off-platform. We just broker the claim.

When a period closes, the top three signed-in players each get a 6-digit redemption code on their phone. They show it to you, you type it into your dashboard, the prize is marked redeemed.

6-digit code

Generated automatically when the period closes. No QR to scan, no app to switch into — the winner just shows their screen.

Sign-in required

Players must be signed in to claim a prize. Pending scores don't qualify — that's the cue we use to convert anonymous scanners.

You set the description

Default is generic ('1st place prize'). Override per period from the dashboard — 'Free coffee', 'Half-price brunch', whatever you offer.

Reactions

One emoji per score. Scarce on purpose.

You can drop exactly one emoji on each player's score — 👏 🔥 🥳 😬 ☕. Once placed, it's locked. The player gets a push notification (if they've opted in) and the emoji stays on their score forever.

This is borrowed from Monzo. The scarcity is the point: when something is rare, it carries weight. A single 🔥 from the venue owner tells a regular they were noticed.

Anti-cheat

Prizes change the contract. The system is built so the leaderboard means something.

Scan-gated

The QR sets a signed cookie. Without scanning the card on-site, you can't even reach the play surface. Sharing the URL with a friend at home doesn't work.

One play per period

Each player gets one attempt per period per identity. Database-level constraint — no way around it from the client.

Server-authoritative scoring

Correct answers never reach the browser until after submission. The score you see is computed on our server from the answers you submitted.

Owner override

If something looks off — a regular complains, a score is suspect — you can disqualify a score from your dashboard with a one-line reason.

What players see

The scan-to-play loop is mobile-first and zero-friction.

  1. 1

    Scan

Tap the QR with the phone camera. The venue page loads with your branding.
  2. 2

    Play

10 multiple-choice questions. Each one shows up cleanly on a phone screen.
  3. 3

    See your spot

Result screen: '8 of 10. You're 4th of 27 this week at The Lighthouse Café.' That ranking is the load-bearing moment.
  4. 4

    Save and come back

One tap to save the venue. We surface them on /venues/mine with the days remaining and their current spot.

The pending → signed-in moment

First-time scanners play anonymously. The result screen is where we ask them to sign in — framed as 'lock in your 4th-place spot' rather than the usual 'create an account'. That stake-driven CTA is the highest-converting moment in the program.

Hosting a venue

V1 is founder-led — we visit, sign you up, drop off the cards.

  1. 1

    Sign up your business

Talk to us. We capture your contact email and create the Business + Venue records via our internal admin tool. Cards are free in V1 — Quizbits absorbs the print cost.
  2. 2

    Pick a cadence + topics

Daily, weekly, or monthly. Then list 3–10 topics you'd like the rotation to cover ('80s music', '{your city} history', 'Football'). The first quiz generates immediately.
  3. 3

    Place the cards

We drop them off. Counter, tables, noticeboard. Each card prints the same QR — so no per-card tracking to worry about.
  4. 4

    Watch and react

Open your dashboard whenever. See plays roll in, drop emoji reactions, hand out prizes when periods close.

The dashboard at a glance

Everything you need to run the venue, on one page.

This period

Active quiz, days remaining, top-10 leaderboard right at the top.

Next up

Preview the upcoming quiz. Regenerate from the rotation, or swap in a hand-built one.

Quiz schedule

Drop in hand-built quizzes for future periods. Reorder, remove. Empty slots fall back to topic rotation.

Reactions feed

Recent scores. One-tap emoji per score. Disqualify if something's off.

Hall of fame

Past period winners and the prize redemption status.

Card kit

QR preview, copy the link, request more cards.

Self-serve venue signup is coming

V1 is founder-led so we can learn what cadence + prize types drive return play. Once that's locked in, we'll open self-serve signup, paid plans, and chain admin (one Business with multiple Venues).
